JACKSON, MS (Ben Caxton) — The number of coronavirus cases in the mid-south topped 28,000 over the weekend as Mississippi is reporting 9378 cases with 421 deaths from coronavirus. Like other states, Mississippi has seen a dramatic increase in claims for temporary unemployment benefits the past few weeks and the state department of employment security has expanded hours and brought in extra workers to process claims but many people have faced long waits to apply over the phone or online. Tennessee has 14,768 cases with 242 deaths while Arkansas has confirmed 3984 cases and 88 deaths. For most people coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms such as fever and cough but for older adults and people with existing health problems, the highly contagious virus can cause severe symptoms and be fatal.
