Delta State University has announced the creation of the Dr. Butch Caston Endowed Athletic Scholarship, a fund made possible by a generous contribution from Joe and Tom Janoush.
The scholarship honors the legacy of Dr. Butch Caston, a former student-athlete, educator, and interim president of Delta State University. The scholarship is designed to provide financial assistance to student-athletes, supporting their academic and athletic achievements. Caston, a Baton Rouge native, first came to Delta State in 1962 as a football player under Coach Horace McCool.
After graduating, he worked as an assistant football coach at Cleveland High School while completing his Master of Education degree. One of his players, Joe Janoush, continues to affectionately call him “coach.”
Caston later earned his Doctor of Education degree from the University of Southern Mississippi and dedicated his career to public education. He returned to Delta State in 1983 as a faculty member in the School of Education, eventually serving as Dean of Education for 15 years. In 2022, after his retirement, he was asked to return as interim president of Delta State, a role he held until the appointment of Dr. Daniel J. Ennis.
