GREENVILLE, Miss.–You may remember hearing during this year’s legislative session that Entergy Mississippi planned to build a power plant in the Delta. The company has confirmed that and says for the first time in 50 years they will build a natural gas power plant.
The new facility is expected to replace the Gerald Andrus Steam Electric Station in Greenville.
The advanced facility will be the first combined-cycle combustion turbine power station the company has built from the ground up, said a news release from Entergy.
“As our customers’ needs and environmental factors evolve, so must our fleet. We’re investing in cleaner, more efficient power generation now, to help us keep bills lower for customers than they otherwise would be in the future,” said Haley Fisackerly, president and CEO of Entergy Mississippi.
The plant construction will likely mean temporary construction jobs for the next three years.
In the past 20 years the company has bought, but not built, three natural gas power plants:
Attala Plant in Sallis (2006), Hinds Energy Facility in Jackson (2012) and Choctaw Energy Facility in French Camp (2019).
The Greenville plant is expected to be complete in 2028.
