BEULAH, Miss.–The former mayor of Beulah in Bolivar County, has pleaded guilty to embezzling tax money. Bertha Thomas was arrested in February and entered her guilty plea this week, said State Auditor Shad White.
Thomas has been ordered to repay $12,573.42 worth of tax disbursements to the town, which she has admitted to stealing.
Though Thomas was sentenced by the Bolivar county Circuit Court, her sentence has not been made public.
“Thank you to the investigators who worked this case and the prosecutors who chose to bring charges,” said White, in a prepared statement.
“Working together with prosecutors, my office has recovered more money for the taxpayers in the last five years than any other five-year period, and we stay true to our most fundamental promise: zero tolerance for theft of taxpayer money.”
