However, the legislature’s makeup still does not mirror the population it represents. Of the state’s 2.9 million residents, 52 percent are female, 58 percent are white and 38 percent are black. In the legislature, the makeup is 16 percent female, 68 percent white and 31 percent black. Lawmakers open the 2020 legislature today in Jackson with funding for education and prison reforms expected to be big topics for the session. [sc name=”twitterfollow”]
