LELAND, MS (Ben Caxton) — Stealing electricity in Leland won’t be cost-free for thieves anymore. Facing an increasing epidemic of incidents of people simply adding a meter or jumpers to a neighbor’s house when they service is shut-off for non-payment the city’s Board of Aldermen voted unanimously Tuesday night to enact a new ordinance making tampering with electrical meters anywhere in the city punishable by a $500 fine. The new ordinance takes effect next month.
