JACKSON, MS (Ben Caxton) — Anyone planning to run for federal office from Mississippi can start filing their qualifying papers as of today. Democrat and Republican presidential candidates have until January 15th to complete the needed documents. For independents, the deadline is September 4. Less time is available to get on the ballot for House and Senate races. That deadline is coming up on January 10. So far, Democrat Congressman Benny Thompson has confirmed to news outlets that he will be seeking another two-year term. Republican representatives Steven Palazzo, Trent Kelly and Michael Guest are also expected to run again. Republican Cindy Hyde-Smith is seeking a full six-year term, and the Democrat she defeated in a November 2018 special election, former U.S. Agriculture Secretary Mike Espy, said weeks ago that he is running again potentially setting up a rematch between the two in November.
