JACKSON, MS (Ben Caxton) — A new report ranks Mississippiâs workforce the nationâs 7th most impacted during the coronavirus pandemic. The Volusion.com study used data from the Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Bureau of Economic Analysis to rank states by the share of workers employed in retail, leisure, and hospitality industries as well as cost of living and the percentage of residents below the poverty level. Nevada and Hawaii lead the nation in share of employment in retail, leisure, and hospitality at 35.5% and 30.1% respectively while Kansas and Minnesota both have about 19% of their workforce employed in these sectors. 23.5% of Mississippiâs working population is employed in retail, leisure, and hospitality and 19.7% of the workforce is below the poverty level.
