THE DELTA (Ben Caxton) — Dozens of new state laws take effect on January 1st including a new way for gun owners to get a gun permit in Tennessee, a new method for Arkansas police officers to verify vehicle insurance and a pay increase for some Mississippi county officials. Sheriffs will not receive a pay raise but county registrars, tax assessors, chancery and circuit clerks and medical examiners will receive their first salary bumps in almost twenty years. County supervisors will have to approve their own pay increase if they choose. In Arkansas police officers will be able to verify online in real-time if the car they pulled over is insured; another law lowers the top income tax rate from 6.9 percent to 6.6 percent. Arkansas’ tax rate will decrease again in 2021.
