PARCHMAN, MS (Ben Caxton) — Two more inmates have died after being beaten to death in a fight with other inmates at the understaffed Mississippi Stae Penitentiary at Parchman. One of the murdered inmates was 35-year-old Timothy Hudspeth who was serving a 10-year sentence for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The other has not been named awaiting notification of the next of kin. Previously three Parchman inmates were among five dead in an outbreak of prison violence that led to a statewide lockdown in late December, and another inmate was found hanging in his cell at the facility Saturday night. That brings the total who have died at Parchman to nine over the last month. The state has responded by moving hundreds of inmates from Parchman to a private prison and moving inmates to units that had been closed previously due to decrepit conditions. The Department of Corrections said Tuesday in a statement that Tuesday’s deaths appear to be an “isolated incident” and “not a continuation of the recent retaliatory killings.”
