Mississippi’s (Ben Caxton)— total number of confirmed COVID-19 coronavirus cases topped 80,000 with Wednesday’s update from the state health department, though the average number of daily new cases over the last week has leveled off.
Mississippi’s 7- and 14-day, daily average of new COVID-19 coronavirus cases dropped slightly Wednesday after several days of inching higher.
On Wednesday, the state reported 904 new coronavirus cases were confirmed in the last 24 hours. The state also reported 58 more deaths Wednesday from the prior day. Of the deaths reported Wednesday, the state said 44 occurred between July 2 and August 18.
Through Wednesday’s statistics, 713 deaths have been reported in August from COVID-19, making August the deadliest month on record for Mississippi. The monthly death toll, however, is not exact due to delays in reporting that can cause deaths to be reported weeks after the person died.
In total, 80,110 cases have been found in the state since March. The state believes more than 62,000 of those cases have recovered.
A total of 2,373 people in Mississippi have died as a result of coronavirus, the state reported.
