Tornadoes Confirmed in Cleveland, Lake Village, and Greenville

CLEVELAND, MS (Ben Caxton) — The National Weather Service in Jackson Tweeted Wednesday that they have confirmed four twisters in Saturday morning’s storms in Bolivar and Sunflower Counties, and another in Chicot and Washington Counties. The strongest and most damaging was an EF-2 with winds of 134 miles per hour that first touched down west of Benoit traveling northeast to between Cleveland and Merigold before lifting back into the sky, staying on the ground for nearly 23-1/2 miles with a path as wide 1-1/2 miles at one point. NWS damage surveys also determined that it was a tornado that slammed into the north side of Lake Village and Lake Chicot touching down around 3:33 AM and continued across the Mississippi River into North Greenville before lifting back into the sky shortly before 4:00 AM. That twister packed winds of up to 130 mph, reached a maximum width of 1/2 mile, and was on the ground for nearly 18 miles. The NWS said that other damages in Washington County were the result of strong straight-line winds. Shorter lived tornadoes were also confirmed between Winstonville and Mound Bayou, northwest of Drew, and near Rome and Parchman.
