Tragic Accident Claims Life of Sworn Law Enforcement Officer on Highway 6

On Monday, September 4th, 2023, around 11:00 a.m. on Highway 6 in Panola County, Mississippi. While en route to Jackson, a Mississippi Highway Patrol Trooper and a Sworn Law Enforcement Officer from the Department of Public Safety encountered a two-vehicle collision.

Before their arrival, a 2016 Ford F-150, driven by 21-year-old Benjamin Jackson of Southaven, MS, was heading west on Highway 6. Tragically, it collided with a 2002 Lincoln LS, driven by 64-year-old Dewitt Cole of Sardis, MS, who was also traveling in the westbound direction.

After the collision, the retired Trooper and current Sworn Law Enforcement Officer with DPS, 62-year-old Michael Griffin of Ripley, MS, stopped to assist the driver of the Lincoln. However, the vehicle rolled in a devastating turn of events, leading to a fatal outcome. Michael Griffin sustained severe injuries from the incident and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
