Tunica Officials Discuss Museum Plans

TUNICA, Miss.–Telling the story of an important part of the Mississippi Delta can be a tough job. The Tunica County Board of Supervisors asked a museum curator to help them reorganize the Tunica County Museum and the Tunica County River Parks Museum and Thursday the board heard some of what that expert has come up with.
“Our proposal today is to come in and actually clear out all the stuff that’s ‘grandma’s attic’ that’s been there for a long time,” said Scott Blake. “We have a large storage room that’s full of things that don’t help us tell the story that we’re looking to tell.”
He said redundancy between the two museums has caused the county to waste space and money to some extent by keeping up two water fowl and American Indian exhibits.
Blake suggested combining those exhibits at the River Parks museum.
“We want to come in and identify the objects that are going to help us tell the history of the county,” he said. “Our problem is we’re telling that story in two different places. So, if you’re telling that story in one place, why would you want to go to the other?”
The upgrades and revamps will cost the county some money. So, the board is weighing options. One suggestion was that some of the money could be made up in increased visitor ship and revenue and the museums are planning to spend some money to market the facilities.
