JACKSON, MS (Ben Caxton) — There were 6723 applications for unemployment benefits in Mississippi during the week ending March 21st, a 486% increase from the previous week and an increase of 623% from the number of applications submitted the same week last year. While the federal government has postponed the income tax filing deadline to July 15, Mississippi taxpayers face a May 15th filing deadline. The state Department of Revenue says that’s necessary to have a balanced budget as of the fiscal year on June 30th and says doing so would create a $500 million deficit for the current fiscal year. However, the Homestead Application Deadline has been extended until May 1st due to the COVID-19 health emergency.
