Rescue crews have been searching desperately amid shattered homes and tangled debris for
dozens of people still missing after record-breaking rain sent floodwaters surging through Middle
As of now 22 people were killed, including twin toddlers who were swept from their
father’s arms. Flooding in rural areas took out roads, cellphone towers and telephone lines,
leaving families uncertain about whether their loved ones survived the unprecedented deluge.
The flooding from torrential rainfall trapped residents in their homes, closed highways and prompted multiple water rescues Saturday morning.
President Biden, in an address on Sunday, said: “I want to begin by expressing my deepest condolences for the sudden and tragic loss of life due to this flash flood. I’ve asked the administrator to speak to Governor Lee of Tennessee, right away, and will offer any assistance they need for this terrible moment.”
