The Pentagon has retreated from its defense of a drone strike that killed multiple civilians in
Afghanistan last month.
It announced that an internal review revealed that only civilians were killed in the attack, not an Islamic State extremist as first believed.
Marine Gen. Frank McKenzie, head of US Central Command, called it a “tragic mistake.” For days after the Aug. 29 strike, Pentagon officials asserted that it had been conducted correctly.
The interim mayor of Afghanistan’s capital says many female city employees have been ordered
to stay home by the country’s new Taliban rulers.
Only women who could not be replaced by
men have been permitted to report to work. It is another sign the Taliban are enforcing their
harsh interpretation of Islam, including restrictions on women in public life, despite their initial
promises of tolerance and inclusion
