ROLLING FORK, Miss.–The Yazoo Backwater pumps have been delayed for decades and a new report due out today by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers may not change that outlook.
The pumps were proposed in the 1940s to pump water out of the area around the lower Yazoo River, which is used for farming. But, that plan has been held up for a variety of reasons and at the behest of people and groups and government agencies. The EPA has had a hold on the project for years.
The report from the Army Corps likely contains plans to prevent flooding, rather than machinery to pump water out.
The report also takes into account information gathered over the summer from public meetings held in several places in the Delta to gather public input about the pumps.
