CLEVELAND, Miss. – Delta State University has announced the appointment of retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Michael L. Peeler as the new Director of Public Safety and Police Chief. Peeler, who brings a wealth of experience from his extensive background in military service, law enforcement, and higher education, will take on the role immediately.
Peeler, a seasoned leader with more than 30 years of experience, is eager to contribute to the campus community. He expressed his excitement about the opportunity, saying, “I am humbled and honored to have been selected to serve as the next Director of Delta State University’s Department of Public Safety and Campus Police. As Director, I will utilize my over 30 years of leadership experience to build upon the department’s strong foundation for safeguarding students, faculty, and staff daily.”
Throughout his career, Peeler has focused on leadership, security, and community-building, skills he plans to bring to his new role. “Together, we will focus on emergency preparedness, community partnerships, and innovation,” he said. “I look forward to working with the campus community to ensure that DSU remains a welcoming and thriving place for everyone. I am truly grateful for this incredible opportunity.”
Peeler’s appointment comes at a time when the university is committed to enhancing campus safety and maintaining a secure environment for students, staff, and faculty. His background in juvenile justice and law enforcement adds a well-rounded perspective to the department, which aims to foster an atmosphere of safety, inclusion, and growth at Delta State.
