CLARKSDALE, Miss.–Clarksdale Mayor Chuck Espy says he has an upcoming political announcement, but he did not elaborate when speaking at the final regular meeting of the Clarksdale Board of Commissioners meeting this week.
Espy is stepping down next week from the office of mayor after eight years and not having run again. Orlando Payden will be sworn in as mayor and other commissioners will be sworn in in an inauguration ceremony Monday.
“My political career-hopefully we have a long way to go and a short time to get there,” said Espy. “We’re getting close to making some other political announcements.”
After teasing that, Espy praised his mother and father for his career. His father was the first Black commissioner for Ward 4.
“Everything that I’ve been, I’ve been as transparent as humanly possible to show every side of what I could do, even the parts that people thought were bad.”
Espy chose not to run for mayor again, though he could have possibly served a third term.
