MOUND BAYOU, Miss. — The City of Mound Bayou honored Mrs. Irene Irvin Saffold on Tuesday as she celebrated her 98th birthday, recognizing her lifelong dedication to family, faith, and community.

During a special presentation, Mayor and the Board of Aldermen passed a resolution acknowledging Saffold’s contributions to Mound Bayou — a city known for its deep-rooted history and pioneering African American heritage.

The resolution described Saffold as “a matriarch who exemplifies honesty, integrity, and good moral character,” and commended her for continuing the legacy of “the strong, caring, and loving women” of Mound Bayou.

Born and raised in Mound Bayou, Saffold left the city to pursue her life goals but remained connected to her hometown. The resolution noted that she “returned to pay homage to her earlier life,” keeping alive the values and traditions of the community’s founders.

Family and friends joined city officials in celebrating Saffold’s milestone birthday, offering blessings and congratulations for her 98 years of faith and service.
A copy of the resolution was presented to Saffold in honor of her return visit and her enduring impact on Mound Bayou.
