GREENVILLE, Miss. — A 6-year-old boy is recovering after accidentally shooting himself Monday evening, and his father has been charged in connection with the incident, authorities said.
Officers with the Greenville Police Department responded around 5:40 p.m. to Delta Health the Medical Center after receiving a report of a juvenile with a gunshot wound.
Police said the child’s father told officers that his son shot himself in the leg with the father’s 9mm handgun. According to investigators, the father said he had gone to the restroom when he heard a gunshot. He told officers he ran into the room, discovered his son had been shot and transported him to the emergency room.
Authorities said the child suffered a non-life-threatening injury but was later transferred to another medical facility for additional treatment.
Investigators arrested the boy’s father, Justin Lowe Sr., on one count of child neglect. He is being held at the Washington County Regional Correctional Facility and is awaiting his initial court appearance.
Police said the investigation remains ongoing.
