SUNFLOWER COUNTY, Miss. — A large fire at an auto recycling yard Wednesday afternoon prompted a multi-agency response after thick black smoke was seen for miles, according to the Bolivar County Volunteer Fire Department.

Battalion One responded to a reported grass fire at 14 Walker Road around 4:35 p.m., but crews arrived to find a much larger blaze involving an auto recycling yard. More than a dozen vehicles were on fire, along with used tires, vegetation and a fence.

The smoke plume was visible as far away as Skene, leading Battalion One to respond with all available trucks from its station.
Additional units from Sunflower County, including LSR and the Ruleville Volunteer Fire Department, joined the effort shortly after Battalion One arrived, as the fire was determined to be within their jurisdiction.

Firefighters were on scene for more than two hours working to contain the fire and spent an additional two hours servicing equipment and reloading hoses and other supplies.

No injuries were reported.
