MOUND BAYOU, Miss. — The city of Mound Bayou will host its 18th annual SeptemberFest on Saturday, Sept. 5, bringing residents, former residents and visitors together for a day centered on the community’s history and culture.
Mayor Leighton Aldridge and the Mound Bayou Board of Aldermen are inviting the public to participate in the annual celebration, which recognizes the city’s historic significance as one of the nation’s oldest African American-founded communities.
Festivities will begin with the annual parade and continue throughout the day with live entertainment, class reunions, vendors, a float competition, a barbecue contest, children’s activities, music, food and opportunities for community fellowship.
Aldridge said the event provides an opportunity for former residents to return home, families to reconnect and the community to reflect on its history.
“SeptemberFest is more than an event — it is a celebration of who we are as a people,” Aldridge said. “It is a time when former residents return home, families reunite, businesses showcase their products, and our community proudly shares the history and culture that have made Mound Bayou one of America’s most significant historic communities.”
Aldridge also encouraged those attending to help maintain a safe and welcoming environment throughout the celebration.
He asked attendees to treat others with respect, make responsible decisions, properly dispose of trash and support local businesses and vendors. Residents and visitors are also encouraged to report suspicious activity to law enforcement or call 911 when necessary.
SeptemberFest is expected to bring together generations of residents and former residents as Mound Bayou continues its annual tradition of celebrating its heritage and community.
