CLARKSDALE, Miss.–The City of Clarksdale is preparing to write a $26,000 check to the IRS for some unpaid taxes. The matter was discussed last week during the “vetting session”, a pre-city commissioners meeting.
“It was an oversight and we owe the IRS. It’s on our 941 employee tax that we do file monthly,” said Cindy Doss, deputy city clerk, addressing the board on the matter.
The matter came to light last month when it was discovered that a former clerk had not paid the taxes held out from employee checks.
“It’s just now coming to light that this fell through the cracks,” said Doss.
Mayor Chuck Espy said, in a forgiving tone, “That’s okay. Oversights happen.”
