DESOTO COUNTY, Miss.–He was originally facing three months in jail. Now John Riles will spend five years in prison. Riles, who was an inmate at the DeSoto County Jail, used a taser on a guard there.
Riles was convicted on the assault charge and was sentenced Tuesday.
He was in jail in November 2024 on a forgery charge when the incident happened.
“Let this sentence serve as a warning to those who assault our officers: we will not go soft on you,” said District Attorney Matthew Barton, in a prepared statement.
