GREENVILLE, Miss. — Greenville police are investigating an early Monday morning shooting at a local hotel that left one person dead and another injured.
Officers responded around 1:38 a.m. July 13 to a report of a shooting at the Country Inn Hotel, 2001 Highway 82 East, according to the Greenville Police Department.
Police found two people suffering from apparent gunshot wounds outside the hotel’s front entrance. One victim was conscious and received medical treatment before being taken to a local hospital. The second victim was found unresponsive and later pronounced dead.
Investigators recovered a firearm near one of the victims and collected additional evidence from the scene.
Preliminary information indicates the shooting may have stemmed from an attempted robbery involving multiple suspects who reportedly arrived in an SUV, police said. Gunfire was exchanged during the encounter, leaving one person dead and another with multiple gunshot wounds.
Investigators also received information that the suspect vehicle may have struck the deceased victim while fleeing the scene.
The identity of the person killed has not been released pending notification and other investigative considerations.
The investigation remains ongoing as detectives interview witnesses and follow up on leads.
