Holmes County Man Indicted for Texas Officer’s Murder Faces Additional Charge

LEXINGTON, Miss.–A Holmes County man indicted last week in the Dec. 8 murder of a police officer in Kaufman County, Texas, now faces another charge, which was added this week: assaulting a public servant.
Darrian Cotez Johnson, of Lexington, has been indicted on a capital murder charge for the killing of Terrell, Texas police Officer Jacob Candanoza, 28.
A charge of capital murder carries a possible death sentence upon conviction.
Candanzoa called for backup before being shot during the traffic stop, which was near a Super 8 motel near I-20.The circumstances surrounding the shooting are still unclear.
Johnson was caught the next morning at an RV park about 30 miles from where the shooting happened.
CBS News reported that Johnson is an Ole Miss business graduate and it was not clear why he was in Texas when the shooting happened. A motel clerk saw the shooting and saw someone getting in a truck and taking off.
Johnson had no prior felony record, according to the report from CBS.
