OXFORD, Miss.–Before closing arguments began Wednesday in the murder trial of Timothy Harrington, of Grenada, the judge read instructions to the jury that will decide whether Harrington is guilty of murdering Jimmy “Jay” Lee.
During closing arguments the defense made one more appeal to the jury to consider that the search for “how long does it take to strangle…” was presented as evidence without context. Police say Harrington performed that search the day Lee went missing, July 8, 2022.
If convicted on a capital murder charge, Harrington could receive the death penalty or life in prison.
First degree murder carries a life sentence and lesser charges that could be considered include second degree murder (20 to 40-year sentence) and manslaughter-culpable negligence (2 to 20 years).
