OXFORD, Miss.–A man in the country illegally is going to prison for posing as a federal agent to trick people into giving him money. One of the victims was from Oxford and that’s where Nooruddin Bhai Nassruddin, 52, of India, was arrested.
Federal prosecutors say Nassruddin would call people telling them that accounts had been compromised. One victim, in North Carolina, was told their Ticketmaster account had been compromised. Nasruddin came up with a complicated scheme to get the victim to transfer money, ultimately to him.
In the case of the victim in Oxford, Nasruddin posed as a “member of the Federal Trade Commission”, telling the victim their Social Security number and bank account had been hacked and that he would come pick up their money and stash it for safekeeping.
Nassruddin actually showed up to collect and that’s when he was arrested.
His sentence was five years in federal prison and having to pay back more than $104,000.
