CLARKSDALE, Miss.–The purpose of a new group and project in Clarksdale is to help stop or at least curb youth violence in the city and county. The group, which plans to start the project in June, is asking the city for $700,000 to renovate a building for space.

“So with the struggles that we’re going through right now, this is what we’re doing to try to impact our economic growth, safety and well-being of today’s youth,” said Elizabeth Thomas, at Monday’s Board of Commissioners meeting.

The project is called “Project Chance”, she said. The $700,000 would go to renovate an old funeral home on Yazoo St. primarily for classroom space.

However, Thomas came without a business plan and Mayor Chuck Espy requested one, so that the group would have a chance to get funding through the city’s grant writer.

She said the purpose of having a space is to get kids off the street.
