OXFORD, Miss.–The remains found in a rural part of Carroll County this weekend by hunters may belong to Ole Miss student Jimmy “Jay” Lee.
Mississippi Today reports that a necklace found with the body had an inscription indicating it belonged to Lee, who was believed to have been murdered by Timothy Herrington, Jr., of Grenada, in July 2022.
Herrington was tried last year without a body having been found. That attempt ended in a mistrial.
Another trial has yet to be scheduled.
Law enforcement has not confirmed the events surrounding the discovery of the remains. Sheriff Clint Walker acknowledged the necklace, but gave no further comment to a Mississippi Today reporter.
It is expected that a DNA test will confirm the identity of the remains.
