Severe Storms and Tornado Threat Loom Over Mississippi Delta

BELZONI, Miss.–You could see some strong storms pass through the Delta Tuesday, with the possibility for tornadoes and damaging straight line winds.

“Right now it looks like the main time frame across Mississippi is gonna be in the afternoon hours, possibly extending into the early evening,” said Daniel Lamb, a forecaster with the National Weather Service.
The threat for the Delta is at the “enhanced” level, which is essentially a 3 out of 5. Some of the western Delta counties may see storms as early as 11 a.m.
“With this system there’s gonna be very strong windshear in the atmosphere,” said Lamb. “Really any storms that we have that move through can tap into that wind energy. That can result in tornadoes.”
Lamb said tornadoes are the main threat with the system, though straight line winds around the storms are also possible and could be damaging. Hail is not as much of a threat, though it cannot be ruled out. Lamb said he also wouldn’t rule out the threat for some strong or long-track tornadoes.
