ATLANTA, GA (Ben Caxton) — A new study suggests that COVID-19 will be around until 60 to 70% of the human population is immune to the virus, which could take 18 to 24 months. The study from the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy refers to previous pandemics and lays out three possible scenarios for how the virus could play out. In scenario one, the wave weâre seeing now is followed by a series of similar waves before gradually going away next year depending on where people live and their mitigation efforts. Scenario two, perhaps the worst, shows an even bigger wave similar to the Spanish flu in 1918 coming in the fall while scenario three shows the wave this spring followed by a slow decline of cases and transmissions but no clear wave pattern. The study says whatever happens people should be prepared for COVID-19 hotspots to pop up, or strains of the virus becoming worse, during the next few years.
