ELLIOTT, Miss.–An apparent tornado hit the small town on Elliot early Saturday, causing injuries and damage.
The tornado hit sometime around 1 a.m. in the small town, which is just south of Grenada, along I-55. Photos and video from North Mississippi Storm Chasers and Spotters, showed what appeared to be crumpled buildings and mangled power lines.
An exact accounting of injuries was unavailable early Saturday.
Drone footage from the same group of storm chasers showed rescue workers with flashlights walking through debris from what appeared to be destroyed houses. The exact location was unclear.
Shortly before the storm hit Elliott, what appeared to be a large tornado was seen on a skycam from Greenwood, heading in that direction.
Though no damage was reported, a tornado was also reported on the ground in Hollandale and north of Belzoni.
It is likely that National Weather Service survey teams will be in the area Saturday, or Sunday, depending on their availability due to more possible storms.
