GREENVILLE, Miss.–A serious internet disruption for Optimum customers in Greenville is being blamed on vandalism, said a jointly prepared statement from the company and Greenville Mayor Errick D. Simmons.

The statement was released Sunday, a day after Simmons demanded a full explanation for the outage.

Simmons said the outage was the eighth major outage for the city since January.

“Families couldn’t connect to school. Small businesses couldn’t process transactions. Public safety systems were strained. Our local economy and communication infrastructure depend on reliable service, and Greenville deserves better,” said Simmons.

Sunday the company released the joint statement.

“We sincerely apologize to our customers in Greenville for the inconvenience caused by this week’s service disruption. The outage was the result of a deliberate act of vandalism and theft targeting Optimum’s network infrastructure. Our dedicated teams responded swiftly, working around the clock to repair the damage and restore service as quickly as possible. We appreciate the community’s patience and understanding as we remain committed to providing reliable connectivity,” said Jesse Garcia, Vice President General Manager, Optimum.

No arrests have been announced in the vandalism. But, Simmons did announce a joint meeting with the company May 15, to address the on-going service issues.
