GREENVILLE, Miss.–The mayor of Greenville has announced a campaign he believes will cut down on gun violence in the city. Mayor Errick Simmons announced the “Get Rid of Guns” campaign via video Wednesday.

“If they’re illegal, they’ve got to go. If they are unregistered, they must go,” he said in the video.
Simmons called the campaign a proactive approach to cutting down on juvenile crime, but said parents will also be held accountable.
“It includes key strategies such as gun buyback programs, community outreach, enhanced law enforcement partnerships and support for victims and their families,” said Simmons. He did not make any further announcements about the partnerships he referenced.
He said he believes the program will go into the root causes of violence.
Simmons did not offer any timeline on when some of the programs would begin.
