Indianola County Officials Deal with Complaints About Farmers

SHARE NOW

INDIANOLA, Miss.–Sometimes you do what ya gotta do, and this weekend that’s exactly what farmers were doing along Airport Rd.in Sunflower County, which prompted complaints to county Supervisor Sherry Gaston. She brought it up at Monday’s Board of Supervisors meeting.

The trucks, at times, were blocking both lanes, she said.
“This wasn’t temporary,” she told Sheriff James Haywood. “What if we had had an ambulance or an emergency?”
“They would have let them by, ma’am,” responded the sheriff. He said the farmers were trying to get their crops out of the field so they wouldn’t ruin and couldn’t get the trucks into the field because they were having difficulty with the angle.
He said that’s been happening for years.
“The same people that were complaining to you also complain when the county put speed bumps out there,” said Haywood. “I’m not saying there’s a perfect answer for this. But, sometimes we have to bend a little to allow people to get their product out of the field. This is an agricultural community.”
Some people might say that’s just a fact of life in the Delta.
