CARROLL COUNTY, Miss.–The body that was found Saturday in the woods in Carroll County by deer hunters was confirmed to be missing Ole Miss student Jimmy “Jay” Lee, by DNA testing.
The case is still actively being investigated by Oxford Police, now the Carroll County Sheriff’s Dept., and the Mississippi State Crime Lab.
“The Oxford Police Department made a commitment to finding Jay, no matter how long it took. This case has remained an active investigation since July 8, 2022,” said Oxford Police Chief Jeff McCutchen.
“We are grateful to the Lee family and Jay’s friends for their help and support throughout this process. We hope this confirmation brings them even a small measure of comfort,”
Timothy Herrington, Jr., of Grenada, was tried for Lee’s murder last year. That ended in a mistrial. That trial was conducted without a body having been found. Attorneys for Herrington leaned heavily on that. A new trial date has not yet been scheduled.
A gold necklace bearing Lee’s name was found with the body. But, the DNA testing was required for confirmation.
Herrington is accused of killing Lee to cover up their sexual relationship.
