JACKSON, Miss.–Gov. Tate Reeves signed the bill that is meant to reduce the state grocery tax and over a period of a little over a decade, reduce and eliminate Mississippi’s income tax.
Reeves signed the bill Thursday evening in a ceremony broadcast live on his Facebook page, flanked by members of the state legislature, including Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann and House Speaker Jason White, who had public disagreements about how to go about reducing and eliminating taxes, while keeping the state budget healthy.
“This law means more money in your pocket. It means more jobs in your town. It means more opportunity for your children and grandchildren,” said Reeves.
Some skeptics believe the law might not have much of an effect on people’s finances because other taxes, such as the gas tax, will go up to help compensate.
“The work of your hands belongs to you. It is yours to feed your family, and to invest in your home, to invest in your community because ultimately that’s what this is all about, not just numbers on a balance sheet.”
