CARROLL COUNTY, Miss.–Delta cities and counties are embracing technology to fight crimes. In Carroll County this week the Board of Supervisors approved the purchase of six license plate reader cameras at a cost of about $50,0000, for the sheriff’s dept.
License plate readers allow police to know who is entering or leaving a specific area, which can help them pinpoint a particular car that may have been used in a crime.
The purchase is the latest in a series of purchases, all separate and uncoordinated, by boards around the Delta.
Clarksdale recently approved the purchase of a camera system, as did Greenville. Police can monitor happenings along public streets in a central location, recording and storing the video. Investigators are able to pull video from a monitored area if needed.
