Clarksdale Mayor Claims Resolution in Libel Dispute, But Questions Remain

CLARKSDALE, Miss.–Clarksdale Mayor Chuck Espy seems to believe that the situation between he, the city and the Clarksdale Press Register newspaper has been resolved with the city Board of Commissioner’s Monday decision to drop their libel lawsuit.

However, that may not be the case.

“I am very thankful that this matter is now resolved due to the efforts of the owner of the Clarksdale Press Register and the city of Clarksdale,” said Espy, at Monday’s meeting.

He indicated that an offer from paper owner Wyatt Emmerich was the reason the city decided to drop the suit. The offer was that a clarification, including a modification of some of the language, would be written and published as an addendum to the editorial in question, which criticized city leaders for not giving proper notice of a meeting about the proposed “sin tax” discussed last year.

But, Emmerich told the Associated Press that that offer was made before the city decided to sue and was now off the table.

Espy called out paper publisher Floyd Ingram at the meeting where the Board decided to sue. He accused Ingram of publishing harmful lies about the city board.
