Debate Over District Priorities: Washington County Supervisors Clash on Road Repair Funding

GREENVILLE, Miss.–One Washington County supervisor has accused the board of favoring one district for road projects and repairs over hers and at Monday’s meeting expressed frustration that yet another project near Leland had been put off.

Mala Brooks has said at previous meetings that the road needs of her district, District 4, had been ignored. The road in question Monday was Longswitch Rd., which she suggested should be repaired with county money.
“The only problem that I have with that is that we’re using all of that on one road and it’s not serving the other districts at all,” said District 1 Supervisor Lee Gordon.
“You are so correct because we just did that in District 3. We used all the State Aid dollars on one road in District 3,” said Brooks in response. She indicated that left no State Aid money for the project in her district and moved for a vote to use county money for the repairs.
“You didn’t have a problem then. So, why is it a problem now?” Brooks asked Gordon.
Gordon pointed out that $1.2 million of county money had been used for a bridge in Leland, in Brooks’ district, that did not benefit people in any other district.
“That was a choice that this board made,” she said.
“I’m making a choice to vote against it, then,” responded Gordon.
The board ultimately decided against using county money for the repairs, instead making plans to use State Aid money once it becomes available.
