YAZOO CITY, Miss.–The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers released a report Friday that advocates for the building of the Yazoo Backwater pumps, a project that has been in the planning stages since the 1940s.

The pumps would be constructed along the lower Yazoo River in an area that has flooded many times, causing losses to farmers and financial hardships.
“For decades, the government promised flood control solutions to the people of the South Delta. Today’s announcement puts us one step closer to preventing further hardship, loss, and frustration in the region. It is time to finish the pumps,” said Sen. Roger Wicker , in a prepared statement Friday.
If the plan is enacted, some roads and bridges would likely be closed or relocated, including Hwy. 462.

Part of the plan also would offer people in the areas most often flooded the chance for voluntary buyouts.
