CLEVELAND, Miss. — Delta State University will host a professional development workshop next month designed to help K-12 educators bring financial literacy and investing concepts into their classrooms.

The Stock Market Game Workshop is scheduled for July 9 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the university and is open to educators across the Mississippi Delta. The event is presented in partnership with the Mississippi Council on Economic Education and the FINRA Investor Education Foundation.

The workshop is free to attend, includes lunch and offers participants 0.6 Continuing Education Units.
The program is centered on the nationally recognized Stock Market Game, an educational simulation that allows students to manage a hypothetical investment portfolio while learning about personal finance, economics and financial markets. Through the simulation, students develop critical thinking, decision-making and problem-solving skills.

The workshop is designed to equip teachers with the resources and instructional strategies needed to implement the Stock Market Game in their classrooms. Participants will learn ways to incorporate financial literacy, investment principles and real-world economic concepts into classroom instruction.

The event will be hosted through Delta State’s Finance and Research Lab as part of the university’s efforts to promote experiential learning, workforce development and financial education.

“Financial literacy is an essential life skill, and teachers play a critical role in helping students develop the knowledge needed to make informed financial decisions,” said Dr. Glendscene Williams, professor of finance and chair of Delta State’s Department of Accountancy, Computer Information Systems and Geospatial Information Technologies. “This workshop provides educators with practical tools and resources they can immediately bring back to their classrooms while helping students connect academic concepts to real-world financial decision-making.”

University officials said bringing the workshop to the Mississippi Delta is intended to expand access to financial education resources in a region that has historically seen limited participation in the statewide program.

As part of the initiative, participating school teams will have access to Delta State’s Finance and Research Lab as a collaborative meeting space during the Fall 2026 Stock Market Game trading session. Officials said the facility offers students exposure to a collegiate learning environment while supporting college readiness and economic education.

Teachers who complete the workshop and sponsor student teams during the fall trading session may also qualify for classroom supply rewards based on team participation.

Registration information is available through the Mississippi Council on Economic Education.
