LULA, Miss.–Damage from Saturday’s squall line that moved through Mississippi, was mostly confined to flooding in Delta counties.
Although tornado warnings were issued for Sharkey, Washington, Yazoo and Warren counties, no touchdowns were reported in those counties, according to the National Weather Service.
Heavy rain and flooding were reported along rural roads in Tunica and Coahoma counties, with one road in Lula submerged and closed. Traffic lights were also reported out in Tunica County.
While National Weather Service storm survey teams had not wrapped up their surveys of Mississippi storms by Sunday evening, it was apparent that the majority of what was thought to be tornadic damage occurred in Franklin, Lincoln, Rankin and Leake counties, in the southern and central part of the state.
David Cox, lead meteorologist with the National Weather Service Jackson office said the storm that came through Lena in Leake County, was the same one that caused some damage in Flowood in the Jackson Metro area.
“There were reports of damage right around the Jackson Metro area in the Flowood vicinity and some of these circulations did persist for some time,” he said. “Leake, in the area of Lena, does line up with that area of circulation that came right out of Jackson and into Flowood and into Rankin County and so that will have to be looked at.”
The storms may be responsible for two deaths. One of those people was a teenager who was inside a house where a tree fell in Natchez. Another person who died was dependent on oxygen when the power went out in Lowndes County.
