JACKSON, Miss.–The first executive order regarding the use of artificial intelligence by state agencies was signed Wednesday by Gov. Tate Reeves.
The order requires an inventory of how AI is being used by all agencies.
“Like anything new, it is critical that this technology be implemented responsibly and carefully,” said Reeves, acknowledging that AI has the potential to bring economic benefit to the state. He said, though, that the privacy of citizens must be protected.
The executive order will also be used to set policy and to “coordinate with state agencies to develop policy recommendations for the agency’s responsible use of AI, including principles, guidelines, and criteria to govern the acquisition, development and utilization of AI by state agencies.”
The order also directs the state to “engage with private stakeholders” to help coordinate best practices for the use of the technology.
