GREENVILLE, Miss.–First responders were the group mentioned most often at Greenville’s 9/11 memorial, held Wednesday.
The ceremony, which included firefighters, police officers and community members, had the street closed off in front of City Hall while the Greenville High Choir sang and a bell tolled for the some three thousand people who died on Sept. 11, 2001.
“While I was too young to realize the true impact this terrorist attack had on our county when it happened, I can appreciate the unity it created as a result and in the responder world,” said Sarah Hester, with Washington County Emergency Management.
She said she believes it has fostered better cooperation and that means better results for people who live in the Delta.
“We are blessed to be in a community where you have sheriff, police, fire…they’re gonna come running when tragedy unfolds. We saw that in Rolling Fork,” she said, referring to the 2023 tornado.
