Greenville, Miss. — The City of Greenville and the Washington County Economic Alliance are joining forces to revitalize Historic Nelson Street, a cultural landmark once known as the Black Main Street of the Mississippi Delta.
City officials announced infrastructure improvements, including new sidewalks and storm drain upgrades, as part of broader efforts to restore the street’s economic and cultural vitality. The investments are being described as “catalytic” — intended to drive long-term change and community renewal.
“Historic Nelson Street will not be left behind,” Mayor Errick D. Simmons said. “This street tells the story of our people — and we’re ensuring its legacy is preserved, restored, and revitalized for generations to come.”
The revitalization efforts reflect a strategic partnership with the Washington County Economic Alliance and receive additional support from Visit Mississippi, the Mississippi Development Authority, and the Delta Regional Authority.
Once a hub of Black-owned businesses, entertainment, and social life during the era of segregation, Nelson Street remains a symbol of resilience and pride for the city’s African American community.
