GREENVILLE, Miss.–Someone took a shot at police Tuesday morning, said Greenville Police Chief Marcus Turner, at a press conference Tuesday. He said no one was hurt, but angrily addressed the people responsible for recent acts of violence, and their parents.

“If there is enough probable cause to bring charges against a parent who participates in their child’s negligence and illegal behavior, we will ask the courts to prosecute you,” said Turner.

Turner called recent behavior, including car thefts and shooting, “foolishness”, and said that in some cases parents have been getting involved in their childrens’ fights, which has made their houses targets for gang violence.

“These criminals are not just stealing cars locally, but they are doing it in communities that are neighboring to us: Indianla, Cleveland, Clarksdale, Greenwood. And, they are committing violent acts in these cars,” he said.

In one recent case, a car was stolen from an Indianola gas station and was suspected of being used in a shooting in Greenville.

Turner said that because of a local partnership with federal authorities, federal prosecutions are possible in some cases, which could result in harsher penalties.
